Vice President of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Maryam Nawaz petitioned the Lahore High Court (LHC) to restore her passport, however Justice Anwar-ul-Haq Pannu, of the Durkani Bench, recused himself.
The bench’s top justice, Justice Ali Baqir Najafi, returned the case fil`e to the LHC’s chief justice after Justice Anwar recused himself. Maryam Nawaz has requested that the Chief Justice reselect the current members of the bench.
After receiving post-arrest bail in the Chaudhary Sugar Mills Limited (CSML) case, Maryam Nawaz went to the LHC earlier this week to request the restoration of her passport, which she had previously surrendered before the LHC deputy registrar.
Maryam claimed that “as per record, the inquiry was launched on November 14, 2018, but no reference has been made against the petitioner as of today despite a delay of approximately four years,” in a plea filed through Advocate Muhammad Amjad Pervaiz.”
PML-N chief argued that “Her rights to due process, life, liberty, freedom of travel, and equal protection under the law have been violated by the indefinite detention of her passport.
The appeal for the PML-N leader’s passport to travel to Saudi Arabia and perform Umrah was previously denied a hearing by three judges.
The panel presided over by Justice Syed Shahbaz Ali Rizvi noted that the case should be heard by the appropriate bench, which had previously considered it and granted her post-arrest release.
