IHC issues notice to NA speaker; ECP over PTI’s ‘piecemeal’ resignation request

In response to a case filed by the PTI, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Thursday issued notifications to National Assembly speaker Raja Pervaiz Ashraf, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), and others.

On April 11, two days after the no-confidence resolution against former Prime Minister Imran Khan was passed by the combined opposition in the parliament, all PTI lawmakers resigned.

Individually or in small groups, approximately two dozen former PTI MNAs approached Ashraf in April to request a meeting to clarify their position, and he chose to verify the resignations of 123 PTI MPs.

Most resignations filed by PTI MNAs were not handwritten, according to NA Secretariat sources. Instead, they were printed on PTI letterhead. They said the workers of the assembly’s secretariat had reservations about some members’ signatures since they didn’t match those on the assembly’s roster.

It was on July 27th that NA Speaker John Boehner accepted 11 legislators’ resignations from the party.

Eighteen members of Pakistan’s parliament have been removed from their posts as a result of a vote of no confidence in the government of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif by the country’s parliament’s lower house of parliament.

As a result, the PTI sought the IHC earlier this week to have all of its MNAs’ resignations and identifications approved by the court.

Faisal Chaudhry, a lawyer for the PTI, stated during today’s hearing that his client’s counsel had presented the court with the authorization letters of all 123 MNAs, who had since become respondents in the case.

At the time of his dismissal, he claimed that deputy speaker Qasim Suri had accepted the resignation of every PTI lawmaker on April 11, 2014.
