Pak against SL: Pakistan lose Abdullah Shafique in reply to Sri Lanka’s 378

Pakistan lost opening batsman Abdullah Shafique for a duck after the tourists bowled out Sri Lanka for 378 on day two of the second Test on Monday.

Fast bowler Asitha Fernando bowled Shafique, who struck a match-winning 160 in the opener of the two-Test series, on the second delivery of Pakistan’s reply when a thick inside edge off the bat bounced on to the stumps at Galle.

Pakistan were 15 for one at lunch with left-handed opener Imam-ul-Haq on four and skipper Babar Azam on seven. They trail by 363 runs.

Overnight batsman Niroshan Dickwella scored 51 and number nine Ramesh Mendis made a crucial cameo with 35 as Sri Lanka resumed on 315-6 in former captain Angelo Mathews’ historic 100th Test.

Three wickets apiece for fast bowler Naseem Shah and leg-spinner Yasir Shah ended Sri Lanka’s first session of their innings.

To his overnight score of 42, left-handed wicketkeeper-batsman Dickwella added nine runs before being dismissed by Naseem.

Naseem took two wickets in the first over and bowled quickly to finish with scores of 3-58.

Dunseith Wellalage, a left-hander making his first professional appearance, was out caught at second slip for 11 when he tried to avoid a bouncer from him and had his glove snatched in the process.

Four fours and a six later, Ramesh was bowled by Yasir after he had defied the opposition bowlers.

Key scores were made by opener Oshada Fernando (50), middle order batsman Dinesh Chandimal (80), and wicketkeeper-batsman Mathews (42).

On Monday, Sri Lanka’s deputy captain Dhananjaya de Silva led the team in the absence of Dimuth Karunaratne, who is receiving treatment for a back injury.
