Free electricity scheme to be resumed after elections, says Maryam Nawaz

PML-N vice president Maryam Nawaz Sharif on Tuesday criticized PTI Chairman Imran Khan for opposing the free power program announced by Punjab Chief Minister Hamza Shahbaz for lifeline subscribers and vowed that the program would continue after the July 17 by-elections.

In her speech to the crowd in Jhang, Ms. Sharif referred to the previous prime minister as a “enemy of Punjab” for suing to stop the initiative.

She questioned the participants, “Have you ever seen a public representative go to court against a remedy provided to people?”

Ms. Sharif said she had asked CM Hamza to gradually expand the relief to consumers using 200 and 300 units per month while assuring the public that the program will restart after the by-elections.

She told the crowd that she had got a communication from Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on the trip to Jhang saying that he would soon announce a relief “to alleviate the pains of the masses,” hinting at a potential decrease in the price of petroleum goods.

She added that PM Shehbaz Sharif had to raise the rates as a result of the previous administration’s deal with the IMF, but she blamed Mr. Khan for the increase in the cost of gasoline and diesel.

She said that by raising prices, the PML-N-led administration prevented the nation’s financial collapse.

As the public’s ire over growing prices increased, Ms. Maryam reassured them that “there will be good news every day” because the government had already made all the difficult choices.

Ms. Maryam also criticized Mr. Khan for campaigning in Punjab as torrential rains were flooding at least a dozen Khyber Pakhtunkhwa regions.

Ms. Maryam also criticised Mr. Khan for campaigning in Punjab as torrential rains were flooding at least a dozen Khyber Pakhtunkhwa regions.

“He needs to be questioned about his duty to KP. There was a US-backed conspiracy in another province, but not in KP. Mr. Khan need to go there and assist the populace, she advised.

Ms. Maryam also addressed Mr. Khan’s claim that PML-N leaders Nawaz Sharif and Shehbaz Sharif have already made preparations for the party’s future leadership. They have trained their generations for public service. What about you, though? Your party would no longer exist if your politics were to end today.
