The global list of 100 Outstanding Women Nurse and Midwife Leaders 2020 has honored eight Pakistani nurses and midwives.
All eight Pakistani women in the list are faculty or alumni of the Aga Khan University’s School of Nursing and Midwifery, SONAM.
Women in Global Health (WGH), in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO), United Nations Population Fund, Nursing Now, International Council of Nurses, and International Confederation of Midwives have recognized these healthcare workers.
The list acknowledged the contribution of these outstanding women from 43 countries who raised healthcare standards across the globe, “especially during these difficult times” of the coronavirus pandemic, a statement issued by the Aga Khan University (AKU) said.
“It is an honor to be acknowledged by the international public health and nursing fraternity. This year has been particularly challenging for healthcare providers, all of whom have shown incredible commitment in their respective roles in responding to the Covid-19 crisis.”
said Dr Karmaliani, according to the statement.
The Dean of SONAM Dr. Rozina Karmaliani has been honored for her efforts to bring improvements in adolescent health, strengthen research capacities, and integrate research into education and practice.

Yasmin Parpio and Samina Vertejee (faculty members) are named under the Community Hero category whereas Saima Sachwani has been recognized for her services in developing an impactful nursing curriculum. Marina Baig received the praise for utilizing mobile health technology to improve maternal health outcomes.
Three SONAM alumni include Dr. Shela Hirani, Neelam Punjani, and Sadaf Saleem have also been appreciated for various contributions under the Community Hero category.
