UKRAINE WAR: Netflix Shuts Down Service in Russia

After Moscow’s onslaught in Ukraine began on February 24, several international corporations have suspended or completely withdrawn from Russia.

Russia’s Netflix has discontinued its service in protest of Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine, according to US media on Sunday. By the beginning of this week, the US-based platform had already ceased its Russian purchases and original programs development.

According to a spokeswoman, “given the current situation, we have halted our service in Russia.”

Netflix did not comment right away when contacted by AFP.

In 2021, Netflix had 221.8 million customers, making it the world’s most popular streaming service. According to The Wall Street Journal, it has less than one million users in Russia, making it a marginal contender.

After Moscow’s onslaught in Ukraine began on February 24, several international corporations have indicated that they are suspending or completely withdrawing from Russia.

As of March 1, Netflix will not be complying with a Russian law that compels streaming providers to offer many free channels, some of which are deemed to be Russian government propaganda sources.
