Government Targets Wealthy Consumers with New Fuel Policy
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has ordered a sharp increase in the levy on high-octane fuel. This fuel is mainly used in luxury vehicles. The decision was announced after a high-level meeting chaired virtually by the prime minister.
According to the Prime Ministerโs Office, the move aims to shift the financial burden toward the wealthy. Officials said the previous levy was Rs100 per litre. It has now been increased by Rs200. This brings the total levy to Rs300 per litre.
The government believes this step will help reduce economic pressure. It is also part of a broader plan to manage rising fuel costs. Authorities emphasized that the decision only affects high-end fuel users.
Relief for Public as Economic Pressure Mounts
Officials said the new levy will generate significant revenue. The government expects savings of around Rs9 billion per month. This amount will be used to provide relief to the general public.
The Prime Ministerโs Office clarified that regular petrol prices remain unchanged. Fuel used by lower and middle-income groups will not be affected. This ensures that daily commuters do not face additional costs.
Authorities also confirmed that public transport fares will stay stable. Air travel costs are not expected to increase due to this measure. The focus remains on protecting ordinary citizens from inflation.
Shehbaz Sharif directed officials to create a proper implementation plan. He stressed the importance of fair distribution of economic relief. The government wants benefits to reach deserving citizens.
Austerity Measures Introduced Amid Fuel Crisis
The decision comes during a wider fuel crisis. Global tensions, especially involving Iran, have impacted energy markets. Pakistan has responded with strict austerity measures.
Earlier, the government introduced a 50 percent cut in fuel allowances for official vehicles. A four-day work week was also implemented in many departments. These steps aim to reduce fuel consumption.
Additionally, half of the public sector workforce has been allowed to work from home. However, essential services continue without disruption. The government is trying to balance efficiency with cost-saving.
Authorities have also urged citizens to conserve fuel. Public awareness campaigns are being promoted. People are encouraged to limit unnecessary travel.
Recently, Shehbaz Sharif rejected proposals to further increase general fuel prices. Instead, he instructed ministries to ensure targeted relief. The goal is to protect vulnerable groups while managing economic challenges.
The situation remains under close review. The government may introduce more measures if needed. For now, the focus is on stability and controlled spending.
