KARACHI: The death toll from rain-related incidents in Karachi has risen to at least 19 on Wednesday. Chief Minister of Sindh Syed Murad Ali Shah took notice of a building collapse in Mawachh Goth during rain and storm. He has ordered the concerned authorities to intensify rescue efforts.
Heavy rain and thunderstorms, accompanied by strong winds, swept across the city on Wednesday night, causing multiple incidents of collapsing walls and roofs. In Baldia Townโs Mawachh Goth area, rescuers have recovered 13 bodies from a collapsed structure, while search operations continue for those still trapped under the debris.
According to rescue officials, several victims had gathered inside the building to seek shelter from the rain. Meanwhile, authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the collapse as emergency teams continue operations.
The chief minister instructed the district administration and rescue services to utilise all available resources to expedite relief work. Subsequently, Zia Lanjar and Murtaza Wahab visited the site to oversee ongoing efforts and ensure timely medical assistance for the injured.
In separate incidents, a wall collapsed in Landhiโs Majeed Colony, killing two people, while a lightning strike near Malir River claimed another life. Additionally, a woman died in Korangi Sector 3ยฝ after a roof collapse, and a man was killed by a falling tree in Korangi No 5. At least seven others sustained injuries across the city.
Meanwhile, rainfall was recorded in multiple areas, including Gulshan-e-Iqbal, North Karachi, Saddar, and Clifton. The Pakistan Meteorological Department reported wind speeds of up to 97 kilometres per hour, intensifying the storm’s impact.
