KARACHI: The Pakistan Peopleโs Party (PPP) today decided to cancel its traditional central rally on April 4 due to the ongoing regional security crisis. The traditional rally marks the martyrdom anniversary of former Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto.
The decision followed instructions from PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and was formally announced by Secretary General Humayun Khan. According to the statement, the party will instead organise Quran recitation ceremonies at the district level nationwide.
Moreover, all district organisations, including public representatives and ticket holders, have been directed to arrange commemorative events and ensure participation. The leadership emphasised that this decentralised approach will allow supporters nationwide to pay tribute while maintaining caution.
Decentralised events to replace traditional gatherings
Traditionally, the PPP holds a large rally at Garhi Khuda Bakhsh, the burial site of Bhutto, drawing thousands of supporters each year. However, the party has chosen smaller, localised events this time, focusing on remembrance and religious observances.
Humayun Khan stated that ceremonies will take place in all districts on April 4, ensuring widespread participation despite the absence of a central gathering. Participants will honour Bhuttoโs contributions and sacrifices, recognising his role in shaping Pakistanโs political landscape.
Furthermore, party leaders reiterated their commitment to preserving Bhuttoโs legacy while prioritising safety amid ongoing national and regional developments. Consequently, the shift reflects a balance between tradition and responsibility.
The PPP maintained that although the format has changed, the anniversary’s significance remains unchanged, with supporters expected to mark the occasion with respect and unity across the country.
