ISLAMABAD: The federal government has appointed Fareed Ahmad Tarrar as the new chairman of the Competition Commission of Pakistan.ย Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif approved the appointment of Tarrar to lead the countryโs competition watchdog.
The Competition Commission of Pakistan is responsible for promoting fair competition across markets, preventing monopolistic practices, and protecting consumers from anti-competitive behaviour.
Officials said the position had remained vacant after Dr. Kabir Ahmed Siddu left the commission to join the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan.
The appointment aims to ensure continuity in regulatory oversight and strengthen enforcement of competition laws across key sectors of the economy.
Regulator tasked with safeguarding market competition
The Competition Commission plays a central role in monitoring business practices and investigating cases of price manipulation, cartel behaviour, and abuse of market dominance.
Through enforcement actions and regulatory guidelines, the body seeks to create a level playing field for businesses while safeguarding consumer interests.
Officials say Tarrarโs appointment comes at a time when the government is focusing on improving market transparency and strengthening regulatory institutions.
Meanwhile, the formal notification detailing the tenure and effective date of the appointment is expected to be issued soon through official channels.
Once notified, Tarrar will assume responsibility for overseeing the commissionโs ongoing investigations, regulatory decisions and policy initiatives aimed at promoting competitive markets in Pakistan.
Authorities believe stable leadership at the commission will help improve investor confidence and reinforce efforts to curb unfair business practices across the country.
