Daily collections rise with revised petroleum levy
Islamabad: Pakistanโs rising petrol consumption is generating additional revenue for the government following the recent increase in the petroleum levy, official sources said.
According to officials, the government is currently earning around Rs90 million in extra revenue each day due to the higher levy imposed on petrol. As a result, authorities have already collected approximately Rs500 million under the revised levy framework.
Moreover, if the current consumption trend continues, the government could accumulate an additional Rs3 billion to Rs3.5 billion in revenue over the course of a month.
Officials say the increase reflects the higher demand for petrol compared with other petroleum products. Consequently, the revised levy has become a significant contributor to the governmentโs daily revenue stream.
The adjustment in the levy structure came alongside broader revisions in fuel pricing aimed at managing fiscal pressures.
Petrol demand surpasses diesel consumption
Meanwhile, Pakistanโs overall daily consumption of petroleum products stands at roughly 55 million litres. Among these, petrol accounts for a large share of the countryโs fuel usage.
Data shows that petrol consumption averages around 22,000 tonnes per day, while high-speed diesel consumption stands at approximately 19,000 tonnes daily.
Following the latest price revision, the government increased the petroleum levy on petrol by Rs20.97 per litre, raising it to Rs105.37 per litre.
In contrast, authorities reduced the levy on high-speed diesel by Rs20.97 per litre, bringing it down to Rs55.24 per litre.
Therefore, the higher levy combined with stronger petrol demand is driving the rise in government revenue. Officials say the trend could continue if fuel consumption remains steady in the coming weeks.
