ISLAMABAD: A massive increase took place in the retail prices of the liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) amid the ongoing energy crisis. The price of LPG per kg has surged by up to 20 rupees per kg.
The sudden spike has added pressure on consumers who rely on LPG for cooking and heating, particularly in areas without access to natural gas. At present, only 20 percent of people are using natural gas, that too with frequent shortage while 80 percent are relying on LPG cylinders.
Market representatives said the price surge occurred after supply disruptions began affecting the domestic market. As a result, retailers have raised LPG prices in several cities over the past few days.
Supply disruptions push prices higher
The upward trend in liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) prices continued on Tuesday as the retail price increased by another Rs20 per kilogram. The retail price of LPG rose from Rs330 to Rs350 per kilogram in the Karachi market on Tuesday.ย LPG dealers said the continued increase in prices was linked to supply disruptions following the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
Association leader Ali Haider stated that LPG availability has declined since tensions involving Iran escalated. Consequently, reduced supply has forced distributors and retailers to increase prices to maintain operations.
Furthermore, traders believe the situation may persist if regional instability continues to disrupt energy supply chains. Many households depend on LPG cylinders, especially in rural and mountainous areas where piped gas remains unavailable.
Calls for alternative imports
Meanwhile, the LPG marketing association has urged the government to take immediate steps to stabilize the market. Representatives have recommended importing LPG from alternative sources to address the supply shortage.
Specifically, the association suggested that authorities explore imports from countries such as Russia and Oman. They argued that diversifying supply sources would help maintain market stability and prevent further price increases.
In addition, industry experts warned that prolonged supply disruptions could intensify inflationary pressures. Higher LPG prices often increase household expenses and affect small businesses that rely on the fuel for daily operations.
Authorities are now expected to review the situation and consider policy measures aimed at ensuring stable LPG supply across the country.
