Iran has claimed that its air defence systems shot down a US fighter jet near its southwestern border. The claim was strongly denied by the United States, deepening tensions during an already volatile regional conflict.
Iranian media outlets reported that a F-15E Strike Eagle was targeted and destroyed by Iranian air defence units. However, the United States Central Command dismissed the report as false and said no such incident had occurred.
The conflicting statements come at a time of rising military confrontation involving Iran, Israel, and the United States. Analysts say the situation highlights the growing information battle accompanying the military tensions in the region.
Iranian Media Reports Fighter Jet Shot Down
According to Iranโs semi-official Tasnim News Agency, an informed source claimed the fighter aircraft was intercepted by Iranโs air defence systems. The source said the aircraft was destroyed after being hit by defensive fire.
The report stated that the two-seat fighter jet was brought down near Iranโs southwestern border region. However, the report did not specify the exact time or location of the alleged incident.
Iranian military sources also claimed that the countryโs locally developed air defence systems were responsible for the strike. Officials said the defensive network successfully detected and engaged the aircraft.
The F-15E Strike Eagle is a long-range strike fighter used by the United States Air Force. It is designed for deep strike missions and is capable of carrying a wide range of weapons.
Iranian sources have previously claimed that several US aircraft were shot down during the recent escalation in the region. Military sources in Iran say the latest incident would add to those earlier claims.
Some Iranian outlets also circulated images and videos that allegedly show damaged aircraft and pilots ejecting from their jets before impact. However, the authenticity of those images has not been independently verified.
United States Rejects Iranโs Claims
The United States quickly rejected the Iranian report. In a statement posted on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), the United States Central Command said the claims were inaccurate.
The command said reports circulating online about a US fighter jet crash in Iran were โbaseless and false.โ Officials stated that no F-15E Strike Eagle had crashed or been shot down in Iranian territory.
US officials did not provide further operational details but stressed that the circulating reports were misinformation. Washington has repeatedly rejected similar claims made by Iranian media during the current crisis.
Military analysts say that information warfare often accompanies active conflicts. Both sides may release statements or images aimed at shaping public perception.
Regional Tensions Continue to Rise
The claim and denial come amid rising tensions involving Iran and Israel, with the United States also involved in the wider regional security situation.
If confirmed, the alleged incident would represent the fourth F-15E Strike Eagle reportedly lost during the current conflict period. However, the United States has not confirmed any such losses.
Earlier reports circulating in regional media suggested that three US fighter jets were mistakenly shot down after entering Kuwaiti airspace. Those reports claimed the aircraft were targeted by the Kuwait Air Force air defence units.
However, details about those alleged incidents remain unclear and contested. No official confirmation has been issued by the United States or Kuwait regarding those reports.
Security experts say conflicting information during conflicts can make it difficult to determine the exact sequence of events. Independent verification of battlefield claims often takes time.
For now, the United States maintains that the reported crash of a F-15E Strike Eagle in Iran did not occur.
