Spain has firmly rejected calls to support escalating military action in the Middle East. Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has warned against following the United States into another conflict. He urged world leaders to focus on diplomacy and push for an immediate ceasefire.
Sanchez said Spain will not follow what he described as โblind and servileโ alignment with war policies. His remarks came as tensions rise between the United States, Israel, and Iran. The Spanish leader emphasized that Europe must avoid repeating mistakes made during previous military interventions.
In a video message shared on the social media platform X, Sanchez made Spainโs position clear. He stated that the country stands firmly against the expansion of war in the region.
Sanchez Warns Against Repeating Iraq War Mistakes
During his message, Sanchez drew parallels with the events that led to the 2003 invasion of Iraq. He recalled how major Western leaders abandoned diplomacy and chose military action before the war began.
The Spanish prime minister specifically mentioned the Azores Summit. That meeting brought together George W. Bush, Tony Blair, and former Spanish Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar. The summit paved the way for the invasion of Iraq after issuing a final ultimatum to Saddam Hussein.
Sanchez said the mindset behind that decision created a more dangerous world. He added that Europe experienced instability and long-term consequences after the war.
According to him, repeating that approach would be a serious mistake. He stressed that Spain refuses to support actions that may worsen global security.
The prime minister said Spain will not become โcomplicitโ in decisions that harm the world. He added that his government will not act out of fear of political or economic retaliation.
Spain Refuses US Request to Use Military Bases
Tensions between Madrid and Washington have increased in recent days. Spain reportedly refused to allow the United States to use military bases on Spanish territory to launch attacks against Iran.
Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares strongly rejected claims that Spain had agreed to cooperate militarily with the United States.
Speaking to local radio, Albares said Spainโs position has not changed at all. He stressed that the government remains opposed to the war and to the bombing campaign against Iran.
The dispute escalated after comments from the White House. Press secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters that Spain had agreed to cooperate with the US military.
Her statement followed strong pressure from Donald Trump, who reportedly warned Spain about possible trade consequences if it refused cooperation.
Albares rejected those claims and said Spain has not altered its policy โby a single comma.โ He insisted the country remains committed to peace and diplomatic solutions.
Spain Organizes Evacuation Plans for Citizens
While opposing the war, Spain is also taking steps to protect its citizens in the region. Sanchez confirmed that the Spanish military is working continuously to organize evacuation plans.
According to the prime minister, military teams are coordinating emergency mechanisms for Spanish nationals who may need to leave the conflict area.
He said the government has full confidence in the countryโs institutions and its economic strength. Sanchez also highlighted Spainโs moral responsibility to promote peace during times of global crisis.
The prime minister concluded his message by expressing pride in the Spanish people. He said moments of international tension require courage and responsible leadership.
Sanchez reiterated that Spain will continue advocating for diplomacy, de-escalation, and a ceasefire to prevent a wider regional war.
