US officials have claimed that Iraqi Kurdish fighters launched a ground operation near Iranโs border. About 1,000 Kurdish militants crossed into Iranian territory to initiate a ground operation.
According to officials, thousands of additional fighters are also attempting to cross the border, potentially expanding the scope of the operation in the coming days.
However, Iranian authorities have strongly denied the reports and stated that no such cross-border movement has taken place.
Reports of cross-border incursion raise regional tensions
According to US officials, the alleged operation currently focuses on Iranian border regions. Nevertheless, officials warned that the situation could escalate if more fighters enter Iranian territory in the coming days.
Meanwhile, US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth stated that the US military is not directly involved in supplying weapons to Kurdish fighters. While speaking to the media, he clarified that the Pentagon has not provided arms for the reported operation.
However, Hegseth acknowledged that other branches of the US government could potentially be involved in supporting Kurdish groups. At the same time, a White House spokesperson denied reports claiming that the United States had deployed ground troops inside Iran.
The spokesperson also noted that Washington expects air superiority over Iranian territory to be established within the next few hours.
Reports claim US and Israel supported Kurdish fighters
British media reports suggest that the United States and Israel have provided weapons to Kurdish militias over the past year. According to the reports, several helicopters dropped weapons for Kurdish fighters in desert areas near Najaf.
The reports indicate that between four and seven helicopters carried out the supply operations to strengthen Kurdish militant groups.
However, Iranโs official news agency has rejected these claims. Authorities in Tehran insisted that no Kurdish fighters have entered the country and stated that the situation remains stable across the three Iranian border provinces.
