Italy has announced it will send air-defence assistance to Gulf countries affected by Iranian strikes, following US-Israeli attacks. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni confirmed the move, emphasizing the protection of Italian citizens and soldiers in the region.
Protecting Citizens and Soldiers
Speaking on radio, Meloni explained that Italyโs support focuses on defensive capabilities, not offensive action. โWe are clearly talking about defence, air defence,โ she said. โThis is necessary not only because these nations are friendly, but also to protect tens of thousands of Italians in the region, including around 2,000 soldiers.โ
She stressed that Italy has a strategic interest in the Gulf, which remains vital for energy supplies to both Italy and Europe. The aid, therefore, is aimed at safeguarding both human and energy security amid escalating tensions.
Role of US Military Bases in Italy
Regarding the potential involvement of US military bases in Italy, Meloni noted that existing authorizations cover โnon-bombing operations.โ Any change to this framework would require careful consideration by the Italian government and likely approval from parliament.
To date, she confirmed, no requests have been made for further involvement of Italian or US bases. The government remains cautious, balancing regional responsibilities with domestic oversight and parliamentary approval.
Strategic Importance of Gulf Support
Italyโs decision underscores the strategic importance of the Gulf region, particularly during escalating conflicts in the Middle East. By providing air-defence aid, Italy aims to protect its citizens, strengthen alliances, and ensure uninterrupted energy supplies essential for national and European stability.
Officials also highlighted that the assistance will be defensive in nature, with no intention to engage directly in the ongoing military confrontations. The move reflects Italyโs cautious but proactive approach to regional security.
Ensuring Regional and Domestic Safety
Meloni reiterated that the governmentโs priority is the safety of Italians abroad and the protection of critical energy routes. The deployment of air-defence support demonstrates Italyโs commitment to its citizens, regional partners, and broader European interests.
The Italian government continues to monitor developments closely, coordinating with Gulf allies to assess needs and provide timely defensive assistance.
