Kurdish Militias Discuss Potential Ground Operation
WASHINGTON โ The CIA is working to arm Iranian Kurdish forces in an effort to ignite a popular uprising against Tehran, CNN reported Wednesday, citing sources familiar with the plan.
Iranian Kurdish armed groups maintain thousands of fighters along the IraqโIran border, primarily in Iraqโs Kurdistan region. Since the war began, several factions have signaled readiness for action and urged Iranian military personnel to defect.
According to three sources who spoke to Reuters, Kurdish militias have consulted with U.S. officials in recent days about whether and how to attack Iranian security forces in western Iran. Two sources said the groups seek to create space for anti-regime protests following the reported deaths of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and other senior officials during recent U.S.-Israeli strikes.
However, the sources said no final decision has been made regarding the timing or scope of a potential operation.
Regional Fallout and Strategic Risks
Meanwhile, Iranโs Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said it launched drone strikes against Kurdish positions this week. The IRGC described the attacks as preemptive action against hostile groups.
Sources told CNN that Kurdish forces expect U.S. and Israeli backing if they proceed. The CIA declined to comment, and the White House and Pentagon did not respond to requests for comment. Reuters could not independently verify the extent of CIA involvement.
Any operation from Iraqi territory would likely require significant U.S. military and intelligence support. However, analysts warn that an armed Kurdish uprising could destabilize Iran and inflame separatist tensions among other minorities, including the Baluch population.
Regional powers, particularly Turkey and Pakistan, may also resist moves that empower Kurdish or separatist factions near their borders.
