Russian President Vladimir Putin is set to convey Arab leaders’ concerns to Iran regarding recent strikes on oil infrastructure in the Gulf.
The Kremlin confirmed that Putin held multiple phone calls on Monday with leaders of four Arab Gulf states. He offered to use Moscow’s strategic partnership with Tehran to help ease rising tensions.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated that Putin “will make every effort to contribute to at least a slight easing of tensions.” The discussions focused on conveying deep concern over the attacks on energy infrastructure to Iranian officials.
Oil prices rose for a third consecutive day as Iran retaliated against U.S. and Israeli strikes with attacks targeting Gulf energy facilities and tankers in the Strait of Hormuz. These developments have heightened fears of further escalation in the region.
Putin also extended condolences to the family of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei through a note to Iran’s Acting President Masoud Pezeshkian over the weekend. However, the Kremlin has not reported further contact with senior Iranian officials since the strikes began.
Currently, there have been no communications between Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump, and no plans exist for such a discussion, according to Peskov.
Observers note that Russia’s involvement could play a key role in mediating between Iran and the Arab states. Moscow’s long-standing ties with Tehran give it influence, which Putin hopes can be leveraged to reduce immediate tensions.
While the situation remains volatile, efforts by global actors like Russia indicate an awareness of the regional and economic impact of the conflict. The oil markets continue to react sensitively to the unfolding strikes, reflecting broader concerns about stability in the Gulf.
Regional experts emphasize that any diplomatic intervention by Russia will require careful coordination with both Iran and the affected Arab nations. At the same time, military actions continue to shape the strategic environment, keeping energy security at the forefront of international attention.
Putin’s engagement underscores Russia’s role as a potential mediator in the widening Iran conflict. His planned communications with Iranian leadership aim to address the grievances of Arab states while managing regional escalation risks.
