Bridgerton star Yerin Ha has opened up about the entertainment industry’s tough beauty standards. The 28-year-old actress plays Sophie Baek in the hit Netflix series’ fourth season. She shared her honest thoughts during recent interviews and events.
Ha spoke at the Lunar New Year Gold Celebration hosted by Gold House in New York City on February 12. She described her experience on the show as amazing and positive. The press tour has kept her busy, but the response has been warm. As Sophie, a maid who sneaks into a masquerade ball and wins Benedict Bridgerton’s heart (played by Luke Thompson), Ha brings a fresh take to the classic Cinderella story. The role mixes romance with deeper talks about class and identity.
She feels proud to represent Asian women in such a popular drama. โI just feel so proud that I get to be the face of that,โ Ha said. She wants to keep pushing for change. In her view, Asian women deserve these leading roles and spaces.
The journey to landing the part was emotional too. In an earlier interview, Ha recalled getting the call while eating breakfast with her mom in Korea. Her mother cried with joy, then joked about indigestion to hide her feelings. That shared moment felt special.
However, fame brings challenges. In a January InStyle cover story, Ha admitted intimate scenes made her nervous at first. She explained that people often comment on women’s bodies and looks freely. โI’ve dealt with body image and that shame for a very, very long time โ and I’m still working through it,โ she shared.
Lessons from Sophie Help Her Grow
Playing Sophie has taught Ha a lot about self-love. The character helps her practice acceptance. โI’m still working on accepting myself for my entirety and being happy with who I am,โ Ha noted. In a world obsessed with perfection, she questions what true happiness looks like. She also mentioned Asian beauty ideals that push for a very slim figure, which added to her struggles during time in Korea.
Bridgerton Season 4, now streaming on Netflix (with Part 2 released February 26), continues to draw fans. Ha’s performance as the Lady in Silver shows her strength. She embraces the role fully and inspires many with her openness about real issues.
