A Turkish F-16 fighter jet crashed in northwestern Balikesir province early Wednesday, resulting in the death of the pilot, the National Defence Ministry confirmed.
The ministry stated that radio contact and aircraft tracking were lost after the jet took off from the 9th Main Jet Base Command in Balikesir at 12:56 a.m. local time (2156 GMT Tuesday). Following the loss of contact, authorities immediately initiated search and rescue operations to locate the aircraft.
Later, the wreckage of the fighter jet was discovered. The ministry confirmed that the pilot was martyred in the crash and extended condolences to the family. A full investigation will follow, with a crash examination team tasked to determine the cause of the accident.
Balikesir Governor Ismail Ustaoglu also expressed his condolences to the pilotโs family, highlighting the nationโs respect for military personnel and their sacrifices. The ministry emphasized that a thorough review would be conducted to identify the factors leading to the crash.
Meanwhile, emergency teams secured the crash site to preserve evidence and assist investigators. Authorities will examine flight data, maintenance records, and environmental conditions to determine the cause of the incident.
