Elite raid targets powerful CJNG chief
Mexican authorities said security forces killed Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as El Mencho, during a military operation in western Jalisco. Officials confirmed that seven members of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel died in the raid carried out by Army Special Forces on Sunday.
According to Mexicoโs Defence Ministry, the operation took place in Tapalpa, a known cartel stronghold. Special Forces coordinated with intelligence agencies and prosecutors, deploying Air Force aircraft and National Guard units. Authorities said troops came under attack and responded in self-defence, killing four suspects at the scene. Three others died from severe injuries during air transfer.
Two cartel members were arrested, and security forces seized heavy weapons, including rocket launchers and armoured vehicles. Three soldiers were wounded and flown to medical facilities in Mexico City. Officials added the mission relied partly on intelligence shared by the United States, which had offered a $15 million reward for Osegueraโs capture.
Violence erupts after cartel leaderโs death
Oseguera, a former police officer, built the CJNG into one of Mexicoโs most violent and influential criminal groups after breaking from the Milenio Cartel. His death triggered immediate unrest, with reports of roadblocks, arson, and gunfights across several regions.
Jalisco Governor Pablo Lemus Navarro issued a red alert as violence spread, urging residents to stay indoors while public transport was suspended. Authorities also reported incidents in Tamaulipas, Michoacรกn, and Nayarit, prompting broader deployments.
Foreign governments issued warnings as unrest escalated. The United States advised citizens to shelter in place amid security operations and travel disruptions, while Canada issued similar alerts, including warnings for tourists in Puerto Vallarta.
