SANDRINGHAM, England, Feb 20 โ British police searched the residence of Prince Andrew, born Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, on Friday after arresting him on suspicion of misconduct in public office.
Officers detained the 66-year-old royal on Thursday โ his birthday โ over allegations that he sent confidential government documents to disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein while serving as the UKโs Special Representative for Trade and Investment. Police held him for more than 10 hours before releasing him under investigation. Authorities have not charged him with any offence.
Meanwhile, images of Andrew leaving a police station circulated globally. In a Reuters photograph, he appeared visibly shaken, seated in the back of a vehicle. British and international newspapers prominently featured the image alongside stark headlines.
Andrew has consistently denied wrongdoing related to Epstein, a convicted sex offender who died in 2019. However, previously released US government documents indicated that he maintained contact with Epstein after the financierโs 2008 conviction. The files suggested Andrew shared reports concerning investment opportunities in Afghanistan and assessments of Vietnam and Singapore.
King Charles Responds as Searches Continue
King Charles, who removed Andrewโs princely title and royal duties last year, said he received news of the arrest with โdeepest concern.โ He emphasized that the legal process must proceed independently and fairly.
Subsequently, police searched Wood Farm on the Sandringham estate, where Andrew currently resides, and a mansion on the Windsor estate where he previously lived. Authorities confirmed they concluded searches in Sandringham while continuing operations in Windsor.
Although arrest indicates reasonable suspicion, it does not establish guilt. If convicted of misconduct in public office, Andrew could face life imprisonment, with any trial heard in Crown Court.
