Mohsin Naqvi met members of Pakistanโs national hockey team at Gaddafi Stadium. He ordered immediate arrangements for a training camp before the Egypt World Cup Qualifiers.
The chairman directed officials to ensure complete logistical support. Furthermore, he instructed authorities to arrange travel tickets, kits, and hotel accommodations without delay.
Players briefed him about unpleasant incidents during the Pro Hockey League. Consequently, Naqvi expressed regret over the alleged mistreatment. He assured players of institutional backing and protection.
He also directed that injured players receive immediate medical treatment. In addition, he announced Rs1 million each for players after the team secured a silver medal at the Nations Cup.
Captain Imad Shakeel Butt stated that Naqvi assured the squad no two-year ban would be imposed. He also confirmed that playersโ names would not be placed on the Exit Control List.
Vice Captain Hannan Shahid credited Naqviโs intervention for lifting team morale. Therefore, the meeting provided much-needed reassurance during a turbulent period.
PSB Clarifies Financial Support
Meanwhile, the Pakistan Sports Board stated it fulfilled all financial responsibilities for the teamโs Australia tour. However, it pointed to administrative irregularities within the Pakistan Hockey Federation.
According to PSB officials, the teamโs departure was scheduled for February 2, 2026. Nevertheless, late and incorrect visa submissions caused delays.
After PSB intervention through the Foreign Ministry and coordination with the Australian High Commission, visas were resubmitted. As a result, the team departed on February 5 and reached Hobart on February 7.
The PSB covered the original airfare cost of Rs27.1 million. Additionally, it paid Rs9.7 million due to visa-related errors.
An advance of 49,280 Australian dollars was issued for hotel accommodation. Moreover, each player received $1,610 as daily allowance and nearly $3,000 for miscellaneous expenses.
However, the federation allegedly failed to confirm hotel bookings before departure. Furthermore, PSB noted that required documents for the Egypt qualifiers remain pending.
PHF Leadership Crisis Deepens
Amid growing controversy, PHF President Tariq Hussain Bugti announced his resignation. He sent his resignation to Shehbaz Sharif and imposed a ban on Captain Imad Shakeel Butt over alleged disciplinary violations.
During a press conference in Lahore, Bugti blamed the PSB for accommodation and food issues in Australia. He also called for a high-level inquiry committee.
Subsequently, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif accepted the resignation. He appointed IPC Secretary Mohyuddin Ahmad Wani as interim president.
The prime minister also approved the resignations of PHF General Secretary Rana Mujahid and Treasurer Shahid Parvez Bhindara. Moreover, he directed transparent elections within the federation.
A Critical Phase for Pakistan Hockey
The national hockey team now prepares for crucial Egypt World Cup Qualifiers. However, administrative instability continues to challenge preparations.
Naqviโs intervention has provided immediate relief and clarity. At the same time, structural reforms within the federation remain essential.
Therefore, the coming weeks will prove decisive for Pakistan hockey. Strong coordination and transparent governance could restore confidence and stability.
