ISLAMABAD, Feb. 17 — Pakistan’s opposition alliance and family members of jailed former prime minister Imran Khan on Tuesday rejected Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi’s account of Khan’s recent medical examination, therefore deepening political tensions surrounding his health and treatment. Earlier, Naqvi said the government avoided politicizing the issue and arranged examinations by senior public and private doctors at Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail, insisting authorities ensured transparent procedures. Moreover, he claimed opposition representatives were invited to observe the medical process and later received detailed briefings from examining doctors, consequently proving that proper care was provided. However, the Tehreek Tahafuz Ayeen-i-Pakistan alliance accused authorities of distorting facts to hide deteriorating health conditions and alleged mistreatment during Khan’s incarceration. Meanwhile, Khan’s sisters disputed Naqvi’s claims, saying doctors chosen by the family were repeatedly denied access while requests for hospital admission remained unresolved despite earlier assurances. Additionally, they alleged Khan complained about worsening eyesight and delays in treatment, urging authorities to share medical reports with his personal physicians for independent assessment. Government officials, nevertheless, maintained that hospitalization would occur only if recommended by doctors and argued all inmates receive medical care according to legal provisions. Consequently, the dispute triggered renewed political confrontation, with Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf leaders accusing authorities of creating confusion while protests and road blockades continued in several regions. Ultimately, analysts said continued disagreement risks intensifying political polarization unless both sides agree on transparent medical oversight, independent consultations, and confidence-building measures to prevent further escalation while courts and government institutions address legal and humanitarian concerns surrounding Khan’s imprisonment in coming weeks.
