DHAKA: The newly-elected members of the parliament took oath today in Dhaka. The Bangladesh National Party (BNP) has emerged as the leading party with a two-thirds victory in the general election last week.
Dhaka witnessed a major political moment today as Bangladesh’s newly elected members of parliament took their oaths following a landmark national election. The swearing-in marked the formal start of the 13th Jatiya Sangsad and confirmed the Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s (BNP) return to power after securing a decisive mandate.
Ceremony Held at Parliament Complex in Dhaka
The oath-taking ceremony took place at the parliament complex in the capital, where officials, lawmakers, and invited guests gathered for the official proceedings. The event began with a recitation from the Holy Quran, setting a solemn tone for the session. Soon after, Bangladesh Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin administered the oath to the newly elected parliamentarians.
As the country transitions into a new political phase, the swearing-in signals the start of parliamentary activity and the formation of the next government.
BNP Alliance Secures Majority as Rahman Set to Become PM
According to the Election Commission, the BNP-led alliance won 212 seats, while the Jamaat-e-Islami-led alliance secured 77 seats. As a result, the BNP now holds a clear majority in the legislature, strengthening its position to lead the government without coalition uncertainty.
The BNP chief Tarique Rahman is set to take the oath as Bangladesh’s new prime minister today evening. He belongs to one of the country’s most influential political dynasties.
