Defence Minister Khawaja Asif warned that Pakistan could take action against terrorist groups operating from Afghanistan ahead of Ramadan. He stressed that militants continue attacks from across the border, endangering Pakistanโs security.
In an interview, Asif said Afghan authorities act as accomplices if they remain passive. โI cannot give a final timeline, but we will have to respond as soon as possible,โ he said. Moreover, he added that third-party countries involved in negotiations must realise that delays cause serious losses to Pakistan.
While Pakistan remains open to dialogue, Asif emphasised that repeated attacks inside the country immediately after talks are unacceptable. He noted that Pakistan could explore solutions if militants agree to return or be resettled elsewhere. Consequently, the government plans to remain vigilant until effective action is taken.
Limited Assurances from Afghan Authorities
Regarding relations with the Afghan interim government, Asif explained that Pakistan maintains multiple channels of contact. However, Afghan authorities provide only verbal assurances and cannot offer written guarantees. Therefore, Pakistan cannot rely solely on promises and must prepare to act decisively.
Honouring Martyrs and Their Sacrifices
In the National Assembly, Asif strongly defended the armed forces against political criticism. He labelled Opposition Leader Mahmood Khan Achakzaiโs remarks as irresponsible. โThe armed forces do not belong to any district or province. They belong to the entire nation and sacrifice their lives in the fight against terrorism. Our martyrs are our red line,โ he said.
Furthermore, Asif revealed that 3,141 military personnel sacrificed their lives between 2021 and February 10, 2026. This included 170 officers, 212 junior commissioned officers, and 2,759 soldiers. Punjab recorded the highest number with 1,657 martyrs, followed by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa with 534, Sindh with 452, Azad Kashmir with 234, Gilgit-Baltistan with 161, and Balochistan with 103.
He added that these figures demonstrate the immense sacrifices made to protect national security. In addition, security forces killed over 200 terrorists in operations in Balochistan alone. Asif highlighted that these operations maintain law and order, and Pakistan will continue enforcing state authority wherever needed.
Politics, National Interest, and Accountability
Asif criticised politicians who prioritise personal gain over national interest. He pointed out that some operate in a โgrey areaโ and frequently switch parties. In contrast, soldiers remain loyal and embrace martyrdom for the country.
Moreover, he praised former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif for his enduring public trust. He highlighted Sharifโs leadership in 1993 and 1999 as an example of strong commitment to democratic politics. Finally, Asif reaffirmed that his party will uphold its principles and prioritize the nation above personal or political interests.
