Tรผrkiyeโs population rose in 2025, increasing by 427,224 compared to the previous year to reach 86.09 million, according to official figures released by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat).
TurkStat said the male population stood at 43.06 million, accounting for 50.02% of the total, while women numbered 43.03 million, making up 49.98%.
The annual population growth rate also accelerated, climbing to five per thousand in 2025 from 3.4 per thousand in 2024.
TurkStat reported that urbanisation continued to rise. The share of the population living in province and district centres increased to 93.6% in 2025, up from 93.4% a year earlier. Meanwhile, the proportion living in towns and villages fell to 6.4% from 6.6%.
Istanbul remained Tรผrkiyeโs most populous city, with 15.75 million residents. The city added 52,451 people compared to 2024, keeping its position as the countryโs commercial and demographic centre.
Ankara ranked second with a population of 5.9 million, followed by Izmir at 4.5 million. Bursa, a key industrial hub, recorded 3.26 million residents, while Antalya, a major Mediterranean tourism destination, reached 2.77 million.
TurkStat also noted that Tรผrkiyeโs population is gradually ageing. The median age increased to 34.9 in 2025 from 34.4 in 2024.
At the same time, the total age dependency ratio โ which measures the combined number of children and elderly people per working-age individual โ edged down to 46% last year, falling by 0.1 percentage points.
