Authorities in Lahore have implemented strict security measures ahead of the Basant festival. Police warned that anyone violating safety regulations will face fines and vehicle confiscation.
DIG Operations Faisal Kamran stated that the city has launched strict measures to protect people from dangerous kite wires during celebrations. Riding a motorcycle without safety equipment during the festival is prohibited under the Punjab Kite Flying Act Any violations of the regulations may result in a fine of Rs 2,000, with possible confiscation of motorcycles. Kamran warned that repeated violations would trigger further legal action.
He added that authorities aim to ensure the festival remains safe for all participants. “Basant is a festival of joy, but carelessness can lead to fatal accidents,” he said. Kamran emphasized that citizens’ cooperation is essential to prevent mishaps.
Free Safety Measures for Riders
To assist the public, traffic police have set up camps at multiple locations across Lahore. These camps provide free installation of safety rods on motorcycles. Kamran encouraged riders to make use of these facilities. He said this initiative aims to reduce risks while allowing people to enjoy the festival safely.
In addition, authorities are actively cracking down on the use of hazardous wires, including chemical-coated and metal wires. Kamran noted that these materials pose a serious danger to citizens, especially motorcyclists. He urged the public to report any illegal kite-flying activities immediately.
Public Cooperation Remains Key
Kamran reiterated that the festival can remain enjoyable only with public cooperation. He urged residents to follow traffic rules, avoid dangerous practices, and respect safety guidelines. He also highlighted that city police will continue to monitor the streets during Basant and take swift action against violators.
Furthermore, the DIG reminded parents to supervise their children while flying kites and ensure that all safety measures are in place. He stressed that even a moment of negligence could result in serious injuries or death. By following the rules and using proper safety equipment, citizens can celebrate safely without putting themselves or others at risk.
Authorities also plan to use awareness campaigns and social media messaging to educate people about the dangers of unsafe kite flying. Kamran encouraged citizens to share safety tips and support law enforcement efforts.
