LAHORE: The first day sale of kites and strings in Lahore exceeded 17 crore rupees (170 million), as per market sources. Lahore administration opened the sale of kites and strings on Sunday (Feb 1, 2026), five days ahead of the Basant festival.
The buying and selling of kites and strings have reached peak levels across Punjab, particularly in Lahore, as the city prepares for the much-anticipated Basant festival. Markets have witnessed a sharp rise in activity, with traders reporting record-breaking sales ahead of the celebrations.
Record Sales Highlight Strong Market Demand
A representative of the Kite Flying Association said traders sold more than 400,000 kites on the first day of the festival buildup alone. In addition, vendors sold nearly 15,500 spools of kite string, reflecting strong public enthusiasm for Basant. He explained that demand surged across wholesale and retail markets as families and young enthusiasts rushed to purchase supplies.
He shared details of current prices, stating that large kites sell for around Rs 500, medium-sized kites for Rs 300, and smaller kites for Rs 200. Meanwhile, the cost of kite string varies significantly based on quality. Standard-quality spools sell between Rs 7,000 and Rs 8,000, while premium varieties reach prices as high as Rs 12,000 to Rs 15,000.
Economic Impact Felt Across Lahore Markets
Highlighting the economic impact, the Kite Flying Association representative estimated that sales of large kites alone generated nearly Rs 110 million. Medium-sized kites contributed approximately Rs 33 million, while small kites added around Rs 11 million to overall revenue.
Consequently, total earnings from sale of kites and strings exceeded 170 million.
Moreover, string sales generated an additional Rs 80 million, further boosting the local economy. Traders described the season as one of the busiest in recent years, benefiting small vendors, wholesalers, and related businesses.
The buying and selling of kites and strings continue at full pace in major markets, including Mochi Gate, Islampura, Sanda, Samanabad, and Ichhra. As Basant approaches, authorities expect commercial activity to remain strong across the city.
