LAHORE: The sale of kites and strings for Lahoreโs Basant festival begins on Sunday, as the city prepares for the long-awaited revival of the event from February 6 to 8, the district administration said. After more than two decades, Punjabโs capital is once again buzzing with colour and anticipation.
Officials said authorities have so far approved 2,246 traders to sell kite-flying materials across the city. In total, 2,504 applications were submitted, with 95 rejected and 163 still under review. Registered sales points will remain the only authorised outlets for kites and strings until February 8.
Strict controls on trade and materials
The deputy commissioner said online registration is mandatory for manufacturing and selling kites during the Basant season. Authorities reiterated that only registered traders may operate, warning that violations will trigger strict legal action.
Under an official notification, the production, storage, and trade of kite-flying materials outside the approved framework have been declared illegal. Only kites of approved sizes will be allowed, while strings must consist of no more than nine cotton threads. The use of spinning wheels, sharp strings, or nylon and plastic strings has been classified as a criminal offence.
Moreover, to minimise accidents, motorcycle riders will be required to install iron safety rods during the festival days, with officials stressing that public safety remains the top priority.
Response teams set up for festival safety
To ensure smooth celebrations, the Lahore administration has formed quick response teams in every tehsil. Each team, led by the assistant commissioner, includes representatives from Rescue 1122, police, health, education, and other civic departments.
The teams will monitor safety arrangements, oversee cleanliness drives, establish awareness camps, and submit daily reports. They have also been directed to respond promptly to incidents, coordinate legal action where necessary, and ensure full compliance with kite-flying laws throughout Basant 2026.
