After a 14-year break, direct flights between Pakistan and Bangladesh resumed on Thursday. Biman Bangladesh Airlines operated the inaugural flight from Dhaka to Karachi. This historic launch strengthens connectivity and marks a milestone in bilateral relations.
The fully packed flight departed from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka and arrived safely at Jinnah International Airport in Karachi. The ceremony was attended by top officials from both countries, including Sheikh Bashiruddin, Bangladesh’s Civil Aviation and Tourism Adviser, alongside Imran Haider, Pakistan’s High Commissioner to Bangladesh.
The Pakistan High Commission called the restoration of flights a key step in improving travel links and diplomatic ties.
Boosting Connectivity and Tourism
At the event, Adviser Sheikh Bashiruddin highlighted the Dhaka–Karachi route’s importance for trade, tourism, and people-to-people connections. He explained that Biman Bangladesh Airlines would gradually increase flight frequency. In addition, the airline plans to lower airfares to make travel more accessible.
He also encouraged Bangladeshis to explore Pakistan’s cultural heritage, scenic landscapes, and local cuisine. Meanwhile, Pakistan’s high commissioner praised the initiative, noting that it reflects the shared vision of Muhammad Yunus, Bangladesh’s interim leader, and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
During Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar’s visit to Dhaka last August, both sides agreed to resume direct flights. The high commissioner also expressed gratitude to the Bangladesh government, Biman Airlines, and the Civil Aviation Authority for facilitating the launch.
Public Excitement and Economic Benefits
Passengers on the inaugural flight expressed excitement and called it a milestone in strengthening ties. Social media buzz also reflected public enthusiasm for the direct air link. The restored flights come after months of careful planning and coordination between both governments.
Authorities are confident that the new route will boost business and tourism. With reduced travel time, it is expected to strengthen economic ties between the two historic nations. Moreover, the flight underscores a newly forged commitment to long-term cooperation.
The Dhaka–Karachi route now reconnects citizens, strengthens people-to-people bonds, and offers a practical link for business and leisure travelers alike. This step signals a positive direction in Pakistan-Bangladesh relations.
