Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi is heading to Turkiye this Friday for high-stakes talks. He will engage in crucial diplomatic discussions with his Turkiye counterpart, Hakan Fidan, to address recent developments in Iran and the escalating conflict with the United States.
The visit follows US President Donald Trump’s warning to Iran. On Wednesday, Trump urged Tehran to negotiate a deal on its nuclear program. He added that if Iran refuses, the next US attack could be far worse. He also sent a naval “armada” to the Middle East. Additionally, Trump cautioned Iran against targeting anti-government protesters or restarting its nuclear program.
Iran responded strongly to Trump’s warnings. Tehran blamed its unrest—the largest since 1979—on the United States and Israel. The government threatened retaliation against the US, Israel, and their allies. Iranian forces also violently suppressed protests, killing or arresting thousands of demonstrators.
Turkiye Role and Diplomatic Efforts
Turkiye, a NATO member bordering Iran, opposes any foreign intervention in the country. Ankara urged the United States to resolve issues with Iran “step by step.” Turkiye officials warned that instability in Iran could overwhelm the region.
The Foreign Ministry source said Fidan will tell Araghchi that Turkiye closely monitors events in Iran. He will stress that Iran’s peace, stability, and security are very important for Ankara. Moreover, Fidan will reaffirm Turkiye opposition to military strikes on Iran. He will warn that any attack could trigger global risks. In addition, he will offer Turkiye support to ease tensions between Washington and Tehran.
Fidan will also emphasize Turkiye readiness to assist with Iran’s nuclear negotiations. He will note that Turkiye supports a swift resolution and is prepared to help if necessary.
Global Reactions and Regional Implications
Russia echoed similar concerns on Thursday. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated that negotiations between Iran and the United States still have room to succeed. He warned that any use of force against Tehran could create chaos across the Middle East. Peskov called on all parties to act with restraint and focus on diplomatic solutions.
Russia has strengthened its ties with Iran since its war in Ukraine began. In January 2025, Moscow and Tehran signed a 20-year strategic partnership treaty. Analysts suggest this partnership could influence ongoing negotiations with the United States.
As conflicts intensify, Turkiye and Russia will work to ease the tensions. The primary objective is to encourage dialogue and prevent a military escalation. Analysts believe that diplomatic engagements help promote stability in the region.
