ISLAMABAD: A multi-vehicle collision on the IslamabadโPeshawar Motorway (M-1) today claimed two lives and injured 10 others, including three women, officials from Swabi Rescue 1122 said. The accident occurred when a trailer was involved in an initial crash and blocked the motorway, triggering a chain reaction involving several vehicles travelling from Islamabad to Peshawar.
According to Rescue 1122 spokesperson Luqman, one occupant died at the scene, while another succumbed to injuries after being shifted to the hospital.
Rescue teams rushed to the location and began emergency operations to assist the injured and clear the roadway. The collision caused severe traffic disruption on the busy motorway, prompting a response from the motorway police.
Emergency response and aftermath
Meanwhile, rescue personnel shifted the injured to Bacha Khan Teaching Hospital, where authorities declared an emergency to handle the influx of casualties. Hospital spokesperson Rahan Yousafzai confirmed that two bodies and 10 injured individuals were brought to the facility. He added that five of the injured remain in critical condition.
Furthermore, the hospital director placed all emergency staff on high alert to ensure timely treatment and the availability of required medical facilities. Doctors and paramedics continued to monitor the critically injured as part of intensive care procedures.
Motorway police said their teams reached the site shortly after the crash and coordinated with rescue services to manage traffic and remove damaged vehicles. Subsequently, authorities restored traffic flow once emergency crews had cleared the motorway of wreckage.
Fatal road accidents remain a recurring issue on highways across Pakistan. Officials attribute most crashes to overspeeding, dangerous overtaking, and disregard for traffic regulations. Earlier this month, two separate accidents killed at least 24 people and injured more than 20 others when a truck plunged into a dry canal in Punjabโs Sargodha district and a coach overturned near Ormara in Balochistan.
