KARACHI: The sudden withdrawal of police security for important leaders of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) Pakistan has triggered concern across political and government circles in Sindh.
Authorities removed security personnel from several prominent leaders, including Federal Minister Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui, Dr Farooq Sattar, Mustafa Kamal, Anees Qaimkhani, and Sindh Assembly member Ali Khorshidi.
According to party sources, officials implemented the decision without prior notice. MQM leaders expressed deep reservations and questioned the timing and intent behind the move. They said the lack of communication has heightened fears regarding the personal safety of senior party members.
Party seeks clarity
Moreover, MQM leaders stated that authorities failed to provide any formal explanation or written order justifying the withdrawal. They argued that if security protocols changed, officials should clearly outline the legal basis and operational reasons. Otherwise, such actions could set a troubling precedent for political security arrangements.
Meanwhile, party leaders suggested that recent criticism of the Sindh government over the Gul Plaza tragedy may have influenced the decision. However, they emphasized that this assessment remains speculative, as no official statement has confirmed the motive. In addition, MQM said selective security withdrawals could undermine political stability and trust between coalition partners.
To address the issue publicly, MQM Pakistan announced an emergency press conference scheduled for 4 pm today. During the briefing, leaders are expected to outline potential risks, respond to questions, and announce the partyโs future course of action.
So far, the Sindh government and relevant law enforcement agencies have not issued a detailed response. As a result, uncertainty continues to surround the decision, keeping political observers and party workers on edge.
