LAHORE: The Punjab government has imposed a ban on 130 Punjabi songs ahead of the upcoming Basant festival. The government has issued an official notification to enforce the decision.
Authorities said the move seeks to ensure public order and preserve cultural norms during the seasonal celebrations of the Basant Festival.
Officials warned that strict legal action would follow any violation of the ban. Law enforcement agencies across the province have received instructions to monitor public gatherings, events and performances throughout the festival period.
Authorities cite order and cultural concerns
According to official sources, the banned songs were selected after consultations among administrative and cultural departments. The government maintained that certain lyrics and themes could disrupt the festive environment or conflict with social values traditionally associated with Basant.
As a result, officials stressed that the restriction remains limited to the festival period and does not represent a permanent policy shift. They added that the measure aims to promote a family-friendly atmosphere while preventing incidents that could strain law and order resources.
Meanwhile, district administrations have been directed to ensure compliance at concerts, private events and public venues. Authorities also urged event organizers and broadcasters to cooperate fully to avoid penalties.
Industry reaction and public debate emerge
The notification quickly drew attention from media outlets and music industry professionals. Many artists and producers expressed concern that the ban temporarily sidelines a significant segment of Punjabi music during one of the provinceโs most visible cultural events.
At the same time, the decision has triggered broader debate among the public. Supporters argue that regulation helps protect cultural etiquette, while critics view it as an unnecessary curb on artistic freedom and expression.
Despite the mixed reactions, government representatives reiterated that the ban serves a limited administrative purpose. They emphasized that officials will review its impact after the festival before considering any future steps.
