Indonesia has officially received its first batch of Rafale fighter jets from France. The delivery marks a major step in modernising the countryโs air force capabilities.
Defence officials confirmed that three Rafale jets have arrived. These aircraft represent the first deliveries under a multi-billion-dollar defence agreement signed with France.
The fighter jets are now stationed at Roesmin Nurjadin Air Base. The base is located in Pekanbaru on the western island of Sumatra. The aircraft are fully operational and ready for deployment.
Landmark Defence Deal with France
Indonesia has ordered up to 42 Rafale fighter jets. The aircraft are manufactured by French defence firm Dassault Aviation. The agreement also includes advanced naval platforms.
Under the deal, Indonesia will receive French-built frigates and submarines. This signals a broader military upgrade across multiple defence domains.
France has become Indonesiaโs leading arms supplier in Southeast Asia. Meanwhile, Jakarta continues expanding military partnerships with global defence producers.
Military Modernisation Under New Leadership
Indonesia has significantly increased defence spending in recent years. The push accelerated under President Prabowo Subianto. He is a former special forces commander.
The Rafale acquisition aims to replace ageing combat aircraft. Many existing platforms have reached operational limits. As a result, fleet renewal became a priority.
Officials confirmed that more Rafale jets will arrive later this year. However, the exact number remains undisclosed. Deliveries will continue in phases.
Indonesia Explores Multiple Fighter Options
Indonesia remains active in the global fighter jet market. Alongside Rafales, other platforms were evaluated. These include Chinese and American aircraft.
The country previously considered Chinaโs J-10 fighter jets. It also reviewed the US-made F-15EX. Each option addressed different strategic needs.
For long-term planning, Indonesia signed another major contract. The deal involves 48 KAAN fighter jets from Turkey. These are fifth-generation combat aircraft.
The KAAN jets will use General Electric F-110 engines. These engines also power fourth-generation F-16 aircraft. This improves logistical compatibility.
Strategic Impact on Regional Security
The Rafale jets significantly enhance Indonesiaโs air power. They offer advanced radar, weapons, and electronic warfare systems.
Moreover, the acquisition strengthens Indonesiaโs deterrence posture. It also reflects Jakartaโs intent to safeguard its vast archipelagic territory.
As deliveries continue, Indonesiaโs air force will gain increased flexibility. This supports both national defence and regional stability.
