Thousands of users across the United States reported problems with the TikTok app early Sunday morning, sparking frustration during what has become the biggest snow day of the year for millions of Americans stuck indoors.
According to outage-tracking site DownDetector, reports of issues surged overnight, peaking at more than 35,000 complaints. Users across social media platforms said they were unable to upload videos, while others reported that newly posted content was receiving zero views, even after extended periods.
The disruption quickly became a trending topic as snowbound users turned to other platforms to confirm whether the problem was widespread. TikTok did not immediately respond to requests for comment regarding the outage or its cause.
What Users Are Experiencing
Most reports indicated issues related to:
-
Videos failing to upload
-
Posts appearing live but showing zero views
-
Delayed or missing engagement metrics
While some users said the app continued to load existing videos, others reported intermittent access or slow performance throughout the morning hours.
Timing Raises Questions
The reported outage comes just days after TikTok finalized a major restructuring deal aimed at avoiding a long-threatened ban in the United States.
Earlier this week, TikTok announced it had reached agreements with major investors โ including Oracle, Silver Lake, and MGX โ to form a new American-based entity known as TikTok U.S. The move is designed to address ongoing concerns from U.S. lawmakers over data security and foreign ownership.
Under the agreement, TikTok U.S. will operate as a joint venture with a majority-American board of directors.
New Leadership for TikTok U.S.
As part of the restructuring, Adam Presser, TikTokโs former head of operations and trust and safety, has been appointed CEO of the new U.S. entity. Presser brings years of experience overseeing platform integrity and safety initiatives.
He will work alongside a seven-member board that includes current TikTok CEO Shou Chew, marking a significant shift in how the company operates within the United States.
No Official Link Confirmed
At this time, there is no confirmed connection between the reported outage and TikTokโs recent corporate changes. Service disruptions are not uncommon for large-scale platforms, and no evidence has emerged suggesting regulatory or structural issues caused Sundayโs problems.
Still, the timing has fueled speculation among users, especially given the heightened scrutiny TikTok continues to face in the U.S.
As of late Sunday morning, some users reported gradual improvement, though others continued to experience posting and visibility issues. TikTok has yet to issue an official status update.
