Russiaโs Foreign Ministry on Thursday advised its citizens to postpone travel to Iran as weeks of nationwide protests continue to destabilise the country. The warning followed reports that thousands of people were killed during demonstrations that have drawn comparisons to the turmoil surrounding Iranโs 1979 revolution.
Speaking at a regular press briefing, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said Russians planning trips to Iran should delay their travel until the security situation fully normalises. At the same time, she urged those already in the country to exercise reasonable caution and cooperate with local law enforcement and security services.
The unrest erupted in late December as mass demonstrations spread across Iran over soaring inflation and economic hardship. Subsequently, authorities in Tehran launched a sweeping crackdown that included a nationwide internet blackout. Official figures acknowledge at least 3,117 deaths, although activist groups claim the actual toll may be significantly higher.
Initially, US President Donald Trump signalled potential support for Iranian protesters, warning that American military forces were โlocked and loadedโ if authorities began shooting demonstrators. However, he later stepped back from the threat after Tehran assured Washington that the killings would stop.
Against this backdrop, Zakharova said Moscow strongly urged all sides to avoid hasty or reckless actions. She added that Russia remained in close coordination with Iranian partners, who continue to provide assessments of the evolving situation on the ground.
Meanwhile, President Vladimir Putin has largely refrained from public comment on the crisis. Last week, however, he held a phone call with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, as the Kremlin said Putin was engaged in efforts to de-escalate tensions between Iran and the United States.
Zakharova emphasised that Russia stands ready to facilitate respectful and equal dialogue aimed at achieving solutions acceptable to all stakeholders involved.
