Pakistan has announced its decision to join US President Donald Trump’s Board of Peace (BoP), aimed at promoting stability and reconstruction in Gaza, the Foreign Office stated on Wednesday. The move comes as Islamabad seeks to contribute to the implementation of the Gaza Peace Plan under UN Security Council Resolution 2803.
The invitation to Pakistan was extended last week as part of the Trump administration’s effort to include global figures in the Board of Peace, which will oversee governance, humanitarian aid, and post-war reconstruction in Gaza. Trump is set to formally launch the board in Davos, Switzerland, on Thursday, with a membership price tag of $1 billion.
Pakistan emphasized that its participation aims to support concrete steps towards a permanent ceasefire in Gaza, increase humanitarian assistance for Palestinians, and aid in the reconstruction of the war-torn territory.
Islamabad reaffirmed its commitment to helping achieve the realization of the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination through a credible political process, in line with international law and relevant UN resolutions.
The FO stated that this process should ultimately result in an independent, sovereign, and contiguous State of Palestine based on pre-1967 borders, with Al-Quds Al-Sharif as its capital. Pakistan pledged to play a constructive role within the Board of Peace to alleviate the suffering of Palestinians and support the rebuilding process.
The announcement comes after the October ceasefire, brokered by the US, which halted major hostilities, saw the release of hostages by Hamas, and involved partial Israeli withdrawals. However, ongoing violations and over 460 Palestinian deaths have underscored the need for a robust implementation mechanism.
The Board of Peace includes US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Trump’s envoy Steve Witkoff, former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair, and Jared Kushner. Observers have raised concerns that the board could challenge the UN’s role, while Pakistan’s involvement signals its intent to support lasting peace and regional stability.
