Trump has revealed private messages of French President Emmanuel Macron on his Truth Social platform. In his private messages to Trump, Macron proposed a G7 summit in Paris, with the possibility of inviting Russian President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines.
The proposal, revealed after Trump posted the message on his Truth Social platform, comes amid rising diplomatic tensions between Washington and European capitals.
According to the message shared by Trump, Macron also suggested inviting Ukraine and Denmark to the gathering. He proposed that leaders use the meeting to address disagreements over Greenland and broader geopolitical issues. The initiative follows growing concern in Europe after Trump threatened to impose tariffs on eight European countries in an apparent effort to pressure the European Union over its stance on Greenland.
Macronโs message outlines bid for dialogue
In his message to Trump, Macron struck a conciliatory tone and emphasised areas of potential cooperation. โMy friend, we are totally in line on Syria. We can do great things in Iran. I do not understand what you are doing in Greenland,โ Macron wrote. He added that he could arrange a G7 meeting in Paris on Thursday afternoon following the Davos gathering in Switzerland, where global leaders are expected to convene.
Furthermore, Macron said he could invite the Ukrainians, the Danish, the Syrians and the Russians โin the marginsโ of the meeting. His proposal suggests an attempt to revive diplomatic dialogue at a time when relations between major powers remain strained. Analysts believe the offer reflects Franceโs desire to position itself as a mediator on key international disputes.
Tariff threats deepen US-France tensions
However, relations between Trump and Macron have deteriorated in recent days. On Monday, Trump threatened to impose 200 percent tariffs on French wine after France indicated it would decline an invitation to join his proposed โBoard of Peace.โ The escalation has prompted strong reactions in Paris.
A source close to Macron told AFP on Tuesday that tariff threats aimed at influencing Franceโs foreign policy are unacceptable and ineffective. Nevertheless, Macronโs proposal for a Paris meeting indicates that France still seeks constructive engagement despite mounting pressure. Observers say the coming days will determine whether the diplomatic overture leads to meaningful talks or further confrontation.
