Despite Googleโs reputation for optimization and efficiency, complaints suggest that the batteries in certain models fail to meet long-term expectations. Devices such as the Pixel 6 Pro and Pixel 7 Pro reportedly struggle to hold a charge after around nine months, particularly when running demanding applications or background services.
This issue has raised concerns among users who expected their phones to remain dependable throughout the promised update cycle. While software support continues to be strong, declining battery health undermines the overall user experience and often forces consumers to consider costly repairs or early device replacements.
In response, Google has reportedly patented a new battery design that complies with upcoming European Union regulations. Under new EU rules set to take effect by February 2027, portable electronic devices will be required to feature removable and replaceable batteries. These regulations aim to reduce electronic waste and extend device lifespans by making battery replacement easier for consumers.
Googleโs patented design removes the use of adhesives, which currently make battery replacement difficult and sometimes unsafe. Instead, the battery would be housed within a rigid metal chassis, allowing users to access and replace it without specialised tools. This structure is designed to preserve the phoneโs durability, including its waterproofing and overall strength.
If introduced in future Pixel models, possibly starting with the Pixel 12 series, this innovation could significantly improve battery longevity. Users would be able to extend their phoneโs lifespan simply by replacing the battery every few years, making Pixel devices more sustainable and cost-effective in the long run.
