Sri Lanka has unveiled the world’s largest natural purple star sapphire, now on public display in the capital city, Colombo. The rare and extraordinary gemstone has quickly attracted global attention due to its size, beauty, and immense value, reinforcing Sri Lanka’s reputation as one of the world’s leading sources of precious gems.
The gemstone weighs an astonishing 3,563 carats and has been officially verified as the largest natural purple star sapphire ever discovered. Its owners have indicated they are open to selling the stone, with expert valuations placing its worth at no less than $300 million. Some international specialists believe the value could reach as high as $400 million, depending on market interest and collectors’ demand.
According to gemologist Ashan Amarasighe, the round-shaped sapphire has been named the “Star of Pure Land.” He confirmed that it is the largest verified specimen of its kind and highlighted its striking star effect, a rare optical phenomenon that significantly increases the gem’s desirability and value.
The sapphire displays a clearly defined six-rayed star, a feature caused by light reflecting off needle-like inclusions within the stone.
The gemstone has been carefully polished and is currently held by the Star of Pure Land team. For security reasons, the identities of the owners have not been disclosed. One of the owners revealed that the sapphire was discovered in 2023 during mining operations near Ratnapura, widely known as Sri Lanka’s “City of Gems.”
At the time of discovery, the stone was purchased along with several other gemstones, and its exceptional nature was not immediately recognized. It took nearly two years of examination and expert assessment before its true significance became clear. Its authenticity and classification were later confirmed by two independent gemological laboratories.
Amarasighe noted that Sri Lankan sapphires are highly prized worldwide for their rich colors, clarity, and brilliance. The unveiling of the Star of Pure Land further strengthens Sri Lanka’s standing in the global gemstone industry and highlights the country’s remarkable natural wealth.
