Iranโs Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Saturday accused US President Donald Trump of being responsible for casualties during recent protests in the country. He addressed supporters during a religious gathering, describing the unrest as an American-backed conspiracy aimed at undermining Iranโs sovereignty. Khamenei claimed Washington seeks to impose military, political, and economic domination over Iran and warned that authorities must act decisively against those he called โseditionists.โ He emphasized that while Iran does not seek war, both domestic and international offenders would not be spared, and the nation must break the back of internal disruption as it has in the past.
The protests began on December 28 due to worsening economic conditions and escalated into widespread demonstrations calling for an end to clerical rule, culminating in violence last week. Rights activists have reported that more than 3,000 people died nationwide, and the government imposed an eight-day internet blackout, which has now slightly eased. Residents in Tehran have reported calm conditions over the past four days, though drones were still observed patrolling the city.
Separately, US President Donald Trump praised Iranโs leadership for cancelling what he claimed were hundreds of planned executions of protesters. Trump stated that the leadership called off mass hangings, and he publicly thanked Tehran for the decision. Earlier, Trump had threatened strong action if the executions were carried out, noting the scheduled hangings included more than 800 prisoners. He welcomed the cancellation as a sign of restraint and a step toward protecting human lives.
In parallel, Pakistanโs Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar held a telephonic conversation with Iranโs Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, discussing the internal situation in Iran and the broader regional security environment. Both officials expressed hope for peace and stability and agreed to continue bilateral consultations on mutual interests.
The events highlight ongoing tension between Iran and international actors while signaling cautious steps toward regional diplomacy. Despite the protests, a temporary calm appears to have been restored, and Iranโs leadership is emphasizing control and security while engaging in diplomatic dialogue.
