The Supreme Court of India has sought a detailed response from Bollywood actor Karisma Kapoor after entertaining a petition filed by Priya Kapur, who has requested certified copies of divorce-related court records involving Karisma and her late ex-husband, industrialist Sunjay Kapur. The court has granted Karisma two weeks to submit her reply, following strong objections raised by her legal counsel.
Priya Kapur, who married Sunjay in April 2017, approached the apex court seeking access to records of Transfer Petition (Civil) No. 214 of 2016. This petition was filed by Sunjay during his divorce proceedings with Karisma, requesting the transfer of the case from the Mumbai Family Court to Delhi.
Priya argued that these documents are required for ongoing succession proceedings in the Delhi High Court, claiming her status as Sunjay’s legal heir.
Karisma’s lawyer opposed the application, terming it frivolous and an unnecessary attempt to access personal and confidential information. An attorney representing news agency ANI echoed this stance, stating that the petition appeared to be aimed at unearthing private details rather than serving any genuine legal necessity.
Adding to the opposition, Sunjay Kapur’s sister, Mandhira Kapur Smith, expressed her disapproval of the move. She described the matter as highly sensitive and questioned the need to pursue divorce records years after the case was amicably settled.
She stressed that if Sunjay had intended these documents to be public, he would have made them so himself, and highlighted the importance of privacy, particularly for the children involved.
The Supreme Court had originally heard the transfer petition on April 8, 2016, after Karisma and Sunjay reached an amicable settlement, recording detailed consent terms. Sunjay Kapur passed away on June 12, 2025. Following his death, Priya’s legal team maintains that the records are relevant to settling his estate and related legal affairs.
