Silent Exit Sparks Political Storm in New Delhi
The Indian government, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is facing strong criticism after quietly exiting the strategic Chabahar port deal with Iran. The move followed fresh pressure from the United States, which imposed a 25 percent tariff on countries doing business with Tehran. Critics argue that New Delhiโs withdrawal reflects foreign pressure rather than independent diplomacy.
According to Indian media reports, including The Economic Times, India pulled out of the project without issuing any formal public announcement. This sudden and silent exit has triggered anger across political circles. Analysts say the lack of transparency has raised serious questions about Indiaโs foreign policy direction.
The withdrawal has also resulted in a direct financial loss. Reports confirm that India had already transferred around 120 million dollars to Iran for the project. That amount is now considered unrecoverable. The funds were paid before disengagement and can now be used by Iran at its discretion for port development.
Financial Losses and Institutional Fallout
India assumed responsibility for developing Chabahar port in 2024 under a 10-year agreement with Iran. The project was seen as a key gateway for India to access Afghanistan and Central Asia. It also helped New Delhi bypass Pakistan for regional trade routes.
After the withdrawal, India Ports Global Limited, the state-run company managing the port operations, faced immediate consequences. Its entire board of directors reportedly submitted collective resignations. Soon after, the companyโs official website was taken offline. This further fueled speculation about internal turmoil and policy confusion.
Experts say the shutdown of IPGLโs operations signals a complete halt to Indiaโs role at Chabahar. Observers describe the episode as a major strategic setback for New Delhi. They believe India has weakened its regional influence at a critical time.
A foreign policy journal also reported that Iran now has full control over how the paid funds will be used. This means India has lost both money and leverage in a project it once called vital.
Opposition Slams Modi Government Over US Pressure
Indiaโs opposition parties have launched sharp attacks on the Modi-led government. Congress leader Pawan Khera called the decision a โnew lowโ in Indian foreign policy. In a post on X, he questioned why India allowed Washington to dictate its strategic choices.
The Congress party accused Prime Minister Modi of surrendering to former US President Donald Trumpโs pressure. It recalled that Modi once described the Chabahar deal as a major strategic win. The party said India has now given up control without explanation.
Another Congress statement claimed that 120 million dollars of Indian taxpayersโ money has been wasted. The party said national interest was compromised under external pressure.
Meanwhile, some economic analysts raised concerns about Indiaโs original intentions at the port. They alleged that IPGL appeared focused on control rather than genuine development. These claims have added another layer to the controversy.
The Chabahar withdrawal has revived debate about Indiaโs foreign policy independence. Many believe the episode has damaged Indiaโs credibility as a regional power. Others warn that such decisions could weaken long-term strategic partnerships.
As criticism grows, the Modi government has so far remained silent. The absence of an official explanation continues to fuel political and public outrage.
