Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has signed a strategic cargo agreement with Indonesia’s national carrier, Garuda Indonesia. The move aims to strengthen Pakistan’s export sector and expand international cargo connectivity. According to officials, the partnership marks an important step toward improving trade links and logistics efficiency.
PIA signed the Cargo Special Pro-Rate Agreement to support Pakistani exporters and freight forwarders. Through this deal, exporters will gain smoother and more reliable access to global markets. Moreover, the agreement will help reduce logistical hurdles that often slow down international trade.
Wider Cargo Network and Improved Routes
Under the new arrangement, cargo shipments from Pakistan will travel via Jeddah and Kuala Lumpur before reaching Jakarta and other international destinations. As a result, exporters will benefit from uninterrupted cargo movement and better scheduling.
In addition, the agreement expands connectivity to major global cities. These include Sydney, Melbourne, Singapore, Hong Kong, and Bangkok. Therefore, Pakistani goods will reach high-demand markets faster and more efficiently.
The partnership also opens new doors to key Asian hubs such as Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Seoul, along with broader access to Australian markets. Consequently, exporters dealing in textiles, food items, pharmaceuticals, and engineering goods will see improved market reach.
Strong Benefits for Exporters and Freight Agents
Pakistani exporters and freight forwarding agents will enjoy competitive cargo rates under the agreement. Furthermore, priority cargo handling will ensure faster processing and reduced delays.
Officials believe this initiative will lower transportation costs and improve delivery timelines. As a result, Pakistani products can compete more effectively in international markets. At the same time, the agreement will help exporters respond quickly to changing global demand.
For PIA, the deal supports its long-term plan to grow its cargo business. The airline aims to increase cargo volumes and diversify revenue streams. Additionally, expanding cargo operations will strengthen PIA’s presence in regional and global trade corridors.
Building on Recent Cargo Achievements
This agreement builds on PIA’s recent progress in the cargo sector. Last year, the airline secured a major milestone when the UK Department for Transport granted it a cargo licence. That approval allows PIA to carry cargo directly from Pakistan to the United Kingdom.
The licence followed a successful joint audit by the Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority and British inspectors. Therefore, international regulators have shown renewed confidence in PIA’s cargo standards and compliance.
Overall, the partnership with Garuda Indonesia highlights PIA’s efforts to modernize its cargo operations. More importantly, it supports Pakistan’s broader goal of export-led economic growth and stronger global trade integration.
