Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky affirmed that Ukraine is committed to peace. He responded to recent comments made by former US President Donald Trump. Zelensky stressed that his country is not an obstacle to resolving the ongoing war with Russia.
Ukraine Pushes Back Against Trump’s Remarks
Trump had suggested that Ukraine was less prepared than Russia to reach a peace deal. Zelensky rejected this characterization in a nightly video address. He stated that Ukraine has never obstructed peace and will continue diplomatic efforts. Zelensky also referenced discussions with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte on international coordination.
Russia’s Attacks Highlight Challenges
Zelensky blamed Russia for ongoing aggression. He highlighted missile strikes, drone attacks, and assaults on Ukrainian energy infrastructure. According to Zelensky, these actions demonstrate that Moscow is not genuinely pursuing peace. He emphasized that Ukraine remains committed to diplomacy despite continuous attacks.
Kremlin Supports Trump’s View
Meanwhile, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov echoed Trump’s position that Zelensky may be delaying negotiations. Russia claims it remains open to talks. However, Zelensky maintained that Ukraine will continue to strengthen diplomatic channels to achieve meaningful agreements.
Diplomatic Efforts Intensify
Zelensky vowed to pursue negotiations more actively. He emphasized collaboration with allies and the international community. The Ukrainian president stressed that ongoing discussions aim to secure lasting peace while defending national sovereignty.
US-Ukrainian Relations in Context
Trump and Zelensky have had a complex relationship over the past year. Their interactions have included disagreements over negotiation strategies and diplomatic priorities. Tensions peaked in February 2025 when Trump and Vice President JD Vance clashed with Zelensky in the Oval Office. Since then, subsequent meetings showed improved dialogue and cooperation between the two leaders.
Commitment to Peace and Stability
Despite criticism, Zelensky reiterated that Ukraine prioritizes stability and diplomacy. He underscored the importance of international support in responding to Russia’s aggression. Ukraine remains engaged in talks while continuing to defend its territory and citizens.
