Meta has appointed banker Dina Powell McCormick as president and vice chairman, bringing a former Trump administration official into a senior leadership role as the company accelerates its massive artificial intelligence infrastructure expansion. Powell McCormick, who previously served on Metaโs board, will now join the management team as the company scales what founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg has described as the physical and financial foundation for the next decade of computing.
Zuckerberg said Powell McCormickโs experience at the highest levels of global finance and her international relationships position her well to guide Meta through its next phase of growth.
In a separate statement, he added that she will play a central role across Metaโs operations, with a particular focus on working with governments and sovereign partners to build, deploy, invest in, and finance the companyโs AI and infrastructure projects.
Her appointment comes as Meta significantly increases spending on data centres, chips, and energy supply to support advanced AI systems. The company has joined other technology giants in committing tens of billions of dollars to ensure it can compete at the top of the rapidly evolving AI market.
Banking background expected to shape investment strategy
In her new role, Powell McCormick will help guide Metaโs overall AI infrastructure strategy and oversee its multi-billion-dollar investments. She will also focus on building partnerships that expand Metaโs investment capacity as the company races to keep pace with rivals that are also pouring vast resources into AI development.
Powell McCormick brings extensive financial and political experience to the role. She spent 16 years at Goldman Sachs as a partner, served on the firmโs management committee, and led its global sovereign investment banking business. More recently, she worked at BDT & MSD Partners, which has been involved in seeking US investors for TikTok, according to Axios.
Her hiring also reflects Zuckerbergโs broader political shift. Meta has rolled back third-party fact-checking and diversity initiatives in recent years, while Zuckerberg has adopted a more conservative public posture. Former President Donald Trump congratulated Powell McCormick on her appointment, praising her service as deputy national security adviser during his first term. She is married to Republican Senator Dave McCormick of Pennsylvania.
