The Council of Foreign Ministers of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) convened its 22nd extraordinary session in Jeddah on Saturday, during which it adopted two key resolutions addressing developments related to Somaliland and Palestine.
The meeting took place amid heightened regional tensions and focused on issues affecting sovereignty, international law and regional stability.
One resolution strongly condemned Israel’s recognition of the so-called “Somaliland” as an independent state, terming it a dangerous precedent and a clear violation of international law. The OIC reaffirmed its full support for the sovereignty, territorial integrity and unity of the Federal Republic of Somalia, stressing that any actions undermining these principles pose a direct threat to regional peace and security.
OIC Secretary General Hissein Brahim Taha said the extraordinary session reflected the collective concern of member states and their determination to adopt a unified and firm Islamic position in line with the OIC Charter, international law and relevant United Nations resolutions.
The second resolution focused on the situation in Palestine, condemning Israel’s continued aggression against the Palestinian people and its plans for annexation and forced displacement. Addressing the meeting, Secretary General Taha stressed the urgent need to compel Israel, as the occupying power, to move to the second phase of the ceasefire agreement.
He called for a comprehensive and permanent cessation of hostilities, Israel’s complete withdrawal from the Gaza Strip, the prevention of displacement, and the facilitation of the safe return of displaced Palestinians to their homes.
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar participated in the session and was received by the OIC secretary general and Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the organisation, Ambassador Fawad Sheron. The ministerial meeting was preceded by a preparatory session at the level of senior officials.
Earlier the same day, Mr Dar inaugurated the new chancery building of the Consulate General of Pakistan in Jeddah. The ceremony was attended by Pakistani and Saudi dignitaries, members of the Pakistani community, and consulate officials, marking a significant step in enhancing diplomatic facilities and services.
