Outrage continues to grow in Minneapolis after an ICE officer shot and killed a woman during an immigration enforcement operation, an incident that has intensified tensions over federal immigration policies.
The shooting occurred amid protest actions against immigration raids in the southern part of the city, drawing sharp reactions from local officials, residents, and national political figures.
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey strongly condemned the federal government’s response, dismissing claims of self-defence as “bullshit” and urging ICE officers conducting mass raids to leave the city.
He identified the victim as a 37-year-old woman and said the public deserves transparency and accountability. Minnesota Governor Tim Walz echoed those concerns, calling the official narrative “propaganda” and pledging a full, fair, and expedited investigation.
A video circulating online, though not verified, appears to show a Honda SUV blocking unmarked law enforcement vehicles on a snow-covered street.
As officers approached and attempted to open the vehicle door, the driver tried to move away. An agent fired three shots as the vehicle pulled off, fatally wounding the woman.
President Donald Trump defended the officer, claiming the woman attempted to run over law enforcement personnel and that the shooting was an act of self-defence.
The Department of Homeland Security described the incident as “domestic terrorism,” stating the officer feared for his life and the safety of others. DHS confirmed the woman was killed, while injured officers are expected to recover.
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension and the FBI are investigating the shooting. Meanwhile, large crowds gathered near the scene chanting anti-ICE slogans, and nearby confrontations saw officers pepper-spray and shove protesters.
New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani criticized the killing as an attack on immigrant communities nationwide, pledging solidarity with those targeted by enforcement actions. The incident comes as immigration raids expand under Trump’s second term, during which ICE has been tasked with deporting record numbers of undocumented migrants.
